Report: Whitmer picking Gilchrist as running mate

Elections

LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) — Former state Sen. Gretchen Whitmer, the Democratic candidate for Michigan governor, will pick Garlin Gilchrist II for her running mate, WLNS capitol correspondent Tim Skubick is reporting.

Whitmer will make her choice official in a Monday morning announcement in Lansing, according to WOOD TV8’s Lansing sister station.

Gilchrist, a 35-year-old Detroit native, previously worked for Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and President Barack Obama’s campaign. He also ran for Detroit city clerk in 2017, coming in second to the incumbent.

Last week, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Schuette announced former state Rep. and current Kent County Clerk Lisa Posthumus Lyons would be his running mate.
