DETROIT, Mich. (WOOD) — Longtime Detroit sports columnist Drew Sharp died Friday morning at his Bloomfield Hills home, WDIV reports.

He was 56 years old.

Sharp joined the Detroit Free Press in 1983 and was promoted to a full-time columnist for the publication in 1999. He focused on college and professional sports and often shared his expertise on national sports television programs, including ESPN.

Sharp’s last column was published Oct. 21 and focused on Tom Izzo and the Michigan State University’s basketball team.

“Drew Sharp loved writing about our beloved Detroit sports. He was powerful voice, with big opinions,” Robert Huschka of the Detroit Free Press told WDIV. “He was a longtime member of the Free Press family — and he will be greatly missed.”

It’s unclear what led to Sharp’s death.
