LANSING, Mich. (AP) — If you’re tempted to drink alcohol while boating this weekend, be advised: The cops may be watching.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says it’s stepping up enforcement patrols this weekend on the Great Lakes and inland lakes and rivers.
It’s part of a nationwide campaign called Operation Dry Water.
State boating law administrator Lt. Tom Wanless says officers will keep watch for boat operators who are under the influence.
Wanless says passengers should be careful as well. Drinking too much can cause people to fall and be injured or even tumble overboard.
Other safety measures include wearing life jackets, making sure boats are properly equipped, carrying marine or cellphones and letting friends or family know where you’re going and when you expect to return.——Online: Michigan DNR on boating
