REMUS, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan State Police say they’re treating the case of a body found outside a Mecosta County church as a homicide.
Authorities identified the victim as a 30-year-old man from Remus. A passerby discovered the body in the yard of the chapel at St. Michael Catholic Church, at 8929 50th Ave. in Remus around 8 a.m. Friday.
“We don’t have a lot of information at this point. The investigation is still early. This morning around 8 o’clock, troopers were dispatched to the report of a subject lying in the snow and when troopers and EMS arrived, they found a subject was deceased,” Lt. Natalie King with the Mount Pleasant State Police Post.
24 Hour News 8 spoke to the woman who found the victim off-camera who described the scene as “gruesome.”
Crime scene investigators were called to the scene just before noon Friday.
It’s unclear what led to the man’s death.
“They are going to process any evidence located at the scene as well as map out the scene from there. We’ll take all the evidence and try to put all the puzzle pieces together,” said King.
Authorities said they’re treating the case as a homicide because they don’t have any information indicating otherwise. However, they said they just began their investigation.
“We always investigate any deaths as homicide until we determine otherwise just to make sure that we cover all the bases,” King told 24 Hour News 8.
Authorities are waiting for autopsy results to determine an exact cause of death.
