Bill’s Blog: 18-year anniversary of derecho T-storm outbreak

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — Tuesday marks 18 years since a storm outbreak in West Michigan made history.

During the early morning hours of May 31, 1998 a derecho thunderstorm outbreak swept through the area, with winds topping 130 mph in Grand Haven and Walker.

The Storm Prediction Center ranked it as one of the top thunderstorm events in world history.

The Michigan storms killed four people, injured 153 others and knocked out power to countless homes and businesses, but Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Bill Steffen says it could have been much worse.Read more about the famous outbreak on Bill’s Blog.
