HASTINGS, Mich. (WOOD) — Two doctors were honored Tuesday for saving the life of a man who lost his leg in a boating accident on Gun Lake.
Cameron Cichosz, 20, was seriously injured when he fell off the boat on June 17. The Howell man told 24 Hour News 8 the force of the water pulled him toward the boat’s motor, where his left leg was severed by the propeller.
Barry County sheriff’s officials said the right people were on the water that afternoon. Two Detroit area doctors heard Cichosz’s screams and rushed to his aid.
Dr. Ryan Keating and Dr. Lauren Azevedo created a tourniquet which likely prevented Cichosz from bleeding to death before paramedics could get there.
Tuesday morning, those doctors returned to Barry County’s old courthouse in Hastings to receive citizen lifesaving awards for their courage and action.
The driver of the boat, 21-year-old Michael Butzke of Allegan, faces a felony charge of operating a boat while under the influence of liquor, causing injury.
