GANGES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — After 73 years in business, a family-run hardware store in Allegan County is closing its doors with one giant gift to the community.

Gerstner Hardware, located at 6988 114th Ave. in Glenn, is donating all of its inventory to Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity.

The contribution will allow the organization to upgrade its building supplies. The rest of the items will be sold through the Holland ReStore. Proceeds from ReStore sales will go back into building and repairing homes for families in Ottawa and Allegan counties through Habitat for Humanity.

Gerstner Hardware owners Robert and Vicki Amberg said the decision to close the store was difficult, but they look forward to spending more time with their young daughter. The couple, who have run the store for 15 years, also plan to remain active in the Glenn community.

The Amberg family has also set up a fund where people can donate to the Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity. Contributors should mention Gerstner Hardware Fund when donating by mail or online.
