OTSEGO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — An Allegan County angler recently reeled in an unexpected catch: a loaded weapon police are now linking to a 2001 crime.
Blake Blanchard, 21, was fishing along the Kalamazoo River in Otsego Township on July 28 when he hooked a .357 Ruger Blackhawk, according to Michigan State Police. The Otsego man took home the rusty weapon and called MSP.
A trooper cleaned the defunct weapon and determined someone had tried to obliterate its serial number. The MSP Crime Lab in Grand Rapids restored the number, and detectives determined the gun was stolen during a July 2001 break-in in Monterrey Township.
The victim believed his estranged son was the thief, but never sought charges. The son has since died, according to MSP.
