HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — Kids’ Food Basket will soon be expanding its meal prep services to Allegan County, thanks to donations from Perrigo.
For nearly a decade, Perrigo has donated $375,000 toward programs in Kent and Ottawa counties like Kids’ Food Basket, helping provide healthy food options for at-risk children.
Perrigo Public Relations Manager Sarah Barwacz says Perrigo’s donation of $130,000 will help Kids’ Food Basket expand its reach into a community Perrigo knows well.
“I think the need was really great in the Allegan community, there are some food shortages in the area,” Barwacz said. “We want to make sure the place that we’re operating every day, that we’re taking care of the people in the community and to us it was a no-brainer and a total honor to really be able to help the kids in our area.”
Through Kids’ Food Basket has served more than 8,000 children in nearly 50 schools around West Michigan through its Sack Suppers program.
Kids Food Basket Chief Operating Officer Afton DeVos says Kids Food Basket has had plans to expand into Allegan for some time.
“We’re typically serving more urban populations,” DeVos said. “So we’re looking forward to see how our model will work in a rural context.”
More than 250 volunteers gather every day to help prepare, pack and deliver the sack dinners that according to DeVos, help break down the barriers of poverty.
“We believe that a strong child is a strong West Michigan, and so we really are feeding our future here in West Michigan,” DeVos said. “We’re just so happy Perrigo continues to be an amazing partner of ours and believes in our mission to help these kids be their best.”
