VERGENNES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities on scene said an Ada man was killed in a multi-vehicle crash in Kent County Tuesday morning.
The three-vehicle wreck happened around 6:45 a.m. at the intersection of Bailey Drive and Parnell Avenue NE in Vergennes Township, northwest of Lowell.
A witness told police the 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue was heading northbound on Parnell Avenue and stopped at the stop sign at Bailey Drive, but then continued into oncoming traffic.
The car was first hit by a white Ford E250 van that was traveling eastbound on Bailey. Both the car and the van then struck a Jeep which was heading westbound on Bailey.
The driver of the car, 62-year-old Lawrence Breyound Haywood, died at the scene, the Kent County Sheriff’s Department said.
Police say a passenger in the van, 39-year-old Martin Herrera of Grand Rapids, was taken to a nearby hospital with back and neck pain. The driver of the van, 39-year-old Facundo Cano Gutierrez and the other passenger were not hurt, nor was the driver of the Jeep.
A resident told 24 Hour News 8 that the intersection of Bailey and Parnell is a two-way stop and extremely dangerous. Drivers traveling on Bailey don’t have a stop sign, while drivers on Parnell do. There is a sign warning drivers that crossing traffic does not stop.
The temporarily crash closed Bailey Drive between Parnell Avenue and Alden Nash Avenue.
