COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. (WOOD) — Crews at Fifth Third Ball Park are set to begin construction on three new improvement projects.

The West Michigan Whitecaps plan to have a new warning track, third base hospitality area and expanded playground completed before the first pitch of the 2017 seasons.

The 23-year-old existing warning track will be replaced to help improve drainage of the field. It will also be extended by two to three feet near the first and third baselines.

The new third base hospitality area will be made up of two tiers with 120 new seats. Groups will be able to book the space, but it will also available to individuals on certain dates.

The final project of the construction season is to expand the Meijer Hometown Playground. It will more than double in size from its current 2,500 square feet to 6,400 square feet. The expansion will include a new play structure and inflatables.

The Whitecaps open the 2017 season Thursday, April 6 against the South Bend Cubs.
