2 people rescued from burning building in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Two people were rescued from a burning building in Kalamazoo Tuesday night.

The fire was reported just before 11 p.m. at Jacks Party Store, located at 1601 E. Stockbridge.

When officers arrived, heavy smoke was coming from a second floor apartment and a resident was screaming for help.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were able to get a ladder up to the window and rescue the resident.

While searching the building, a second resident was rescued from another upstairs apartment.

The fire was extinguished about a half hour after it was reported.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says the damage to the building was contained to one of the upstairs apartments and a small section of the roof. Red Cross is assisting the resident who lived there.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
