Calvin edges Hope in 199th rivalry game

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Derrick DeVries scored 29 points to lead Calvin to a 74-70 victory over Hope Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena.

It was the 199th meeting between the West Michigan rivals.  

DeVries rebounded and put back with under a minute to play gave the Knights a 69-65 lead. Riley Lewis hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one at 69-68. Calvin hit its free throws down the stretch to put the game away. 

Lewis led Hope with 22 points. Jason Beckman scored 17 points, Preston Granger added 16 points and Dennis Towns 12. 

Calvin’s Tony DeWitte had 12 points. 

Calvin improves to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in the MIAA. Hope drops to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA.

The 200th meeting is scheduled for Feb. 2. It will be played at DeVos Fieldhouse on Hope’s campus.

The women’s teams play Saturday at 3 p.m. at Calvin College.
