Bye, bye beard: Ferris State coach to shave at rally

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD)  — Ferris State University’s men’s basketball coach will say goodbye to his epic beard this weekend, all for a good cause.

Andy Bronkema vowed to shave it off if a GoFundMe page raised more than $1,000 before his team celebrates its first championship on Saturday. The fundraising page blew past that goal and is now above $4,000.

The money is going to Team Mitchell — a group in Rockford that raises money to find a cure for muscular dystrophy. The group holds a fundraising run each year in honor of its namesake, Mitchell Peterson, who was diagnosed with the disease in 1999.

Bronkema will shave his beard during the Celebrate the Champions rally at Ferris State University. It starts at 6 p.m. at the Jim Wink Arena on campus in Big Rapids.
