NFL scouts eye WMU’s Beal for supplemental draft

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Ineligible for his final year at Western Michigan University, Sam Beal entered his name into the upcoming NFL supplemental draft. If his Thursday pro day is any indication, there’s plenty of interest.

All 32 NFL teams sent at least one scout to Kalamazoo to check out Beal. The Cleveland Browns sent their general manager.

Beal didn’t disappoint: He ran a 4.4 second 40-yard dash with the wind and a 4.51 against it. His vertical was 37 inches. Standing 6-foot-1, he’s got a great size for an NFL cornerback.

“He’s got to feel good about the times he put up,” WMU head coach Tim Lester said. “This is a measurable event. The film speaks for itself. The film was obviously good enough to see those measurables, just to make sure that they all checked out. He put up the kind of numbers I think they all wanted to see.”

Beal was projected as a second-round pick next year. He could go as early as the third round in the supplemental draft July 11.
