Widespread snow blankets West Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — West Michigan was covered in a widespread blanket of snow Wednesday.

Areas that will see the most snow are under a Winter Storm Warning. Everyone else in West Michigan is under a Winter Weather Advisory for a general three to six inches of snow. All weather alerts will be in place through 11 p.m. Wednesday night.>>Inside woodtv.com: Closings and delays

Snow began falling near daybreak Wednesday and most locations in West Michigan picked up 1.5 to 2.5 inches of snow as of noon. The heaviest snowfall came in the afternoon, leading to challenging driving.>>Inside woodtv.com: Map of current traffic conditions | Weather alerts

Unlike the Tuesday’s system, this was not lake-effect snow; everyone got some flakes. Cannonsburg recorded eight inches of snow, while Grand Rapids saw five inches and Paw Paw 3.5 inches.

The snow began to ease around mid-evening, from west to east.

The Kent County Road Commission said the concern for Thursday morning’s commute would probably be ice because of an overnight temperature drop into the single digits.

“That means salt’s not going to work, that means the motorists psychologically are going to see what they think is clear pavement but it’s going to be icy pavement,” road commission Deputy Managing Director of Operations Jerry Byrne said. “And we can’t put chemical on there to melt it off when it’s that cold — it’s just not going to work. So we see people probably over driving the conditions tomorrow morning.”

He recommended driving at half speeds and allowing extra time for your morning commute.

The road commission had 35 trucks on the roads Wednesday night. Around 4 a.m., that number was expected to increase to 55 trucks.

The snowy pattern remains intact through Friday. Although Storm Team 8 is not expecting accumulating snow Thursday, another weaker system will arrive Friday that will provide West Michigan with more snow to play in.
