GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — To commemorate Black History Month, News 8 aired two specials in late February containing stories from the Black community in West Michigan.

Anchored by News 8’s Whitney Burney and Donvan Long, part 2 of our “Honoring Black History” special aired on Saturday, Feb. 27. You can watch that above.

Part 1 of the special aired on Feb. 25. You can watch that below:

Throughout Black History Month, News 8 has introduced you to Black pioneers from our region, including a Western Michigan University scholar who broke race barriers around the world, a successful artist from Niles and a Grand Rapids woman who helped improve the whooping cough vaccine. We’ve looked at efforts to support Black-owned businesses, like a celebrity-backed push to help owners access insurance more easily. We’ve met people working to combat racism in our communities, including hairstylists pushing for an end to hair discrimination and a mom who’s teaching her daughter about Black role models.

You can see those and more reports in the special. You can also visit the Black History Month section on woodtv.com to see our complete coverage honoring Black history.
