The Grand Rapids Pops welcomes Second City: Guide to the Symphony for 3 performances this upcoming weekend: Friday and Saturday, March 16-17 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 18 at 3 p.m.
Second City: Guide to the Symphony is a blend of original sketch comedy with orchestral works by the great masters and new music and songs by Mathew Reid. The show loving satirizes all things orchestral – the hard-working musicians, the all-powerful maestro, the vast orchestral repertoire, and even the quirks of the audience.
Associate Conductor John Varineau will be on the podium as stars from Toronto’s Second City use their theatrical wit and charm to lampoon, delight, and make audiences laugh. Grand Rapids Symphony’s show is in connection with Gilda’s LaughFest.
**Note: The show may not be suitable for children under the age of 15.
The show is a great combination of the best: some of the best comedic performers from Second City Toronto and some of the best music – Mozart, Mahler, and Glinka – from West Michigan’s own Grand Rapids Symphony. It’s a lighthearted and satirical; ultimately, a very fun experience with Second City performers as they use their theatrical wit and charm to lampoon and celebrate the symphony orchestra.
It’s genuinely funny material from genuinely funny people who ultimately celebrate the quirks, delights, and oddities of the symphony orchestra.
