Remaining civil in custody and divorce cases

eightWest

When a couple with children decides to separate or divorce, questions regarding parenting and custody often take center stage. Today we have attorney Matthew DeLange of the Michigan Family Law Center.

Advice:

Speak to an attorney early in the process to have a better understanding of how the process works and to prevent unrealistic expectations.

Don’t vent on social media!  And don’t respond to texts/e-mails while you are upset

Remember the impact on the children

  • Remember that this is a significant change in their world and they pick up on much more than you might expect.
  • Remember that the children’s relationship with your ex is different than your own.
  • When possible try to have exchanges take place during natural transition points.  i.e. having parenting time start/end when they are dropped off or picked up from school.
