GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) Donating to Heart of West Michigan United Way is about to get a lot more fun! The organization is encouraging people to great creative for their Fill the Cart collection drive. Here is why: 39% of working families struggle to meet their basic needs and one in four children in Kent County lives in poverty. These children have a greater chance of:

  • Experiencing homelessness
  • Going without meals
  • Not being able to read at grade level
  • Not learning math skills
  • Dropping out of high school
  • Not finding meaningful employment

The Fill the Cart collection drive is happening now through March 25. When you’re at the grocery store, throw a few extra items in your cart for families in need. Things like cleaning supplies, kitchen and bathroom items, hygiene products, diapers and baby care items are needed by families who can’t afford them.

United Way has unique and fun ideas to participate in Fill the Cart. For instance, throw a baby shower with all the gifts going to United Way. Visit their website for a list of ideas for the Fill the Cart collection drive as well as collection locations and dates.
