IONIA, Mich. (WOOD TV) Good nutrition is one of the most important and basic needs in the development of children. In Ionia County 1 in 5 children are food insecure and in Montcalm County 1 in 4 children are food insecure. A local organization saw this number, and it sparked an interest in helping. 100 Women Who Care brings together 100 women who each donate $100 for a cause. In the end, one local non-profit receives a large donation to help the local community. The Ionia County chapter of 100 Women Who Care chose the IM Kids 3rd Meal Program to donate their money. Because of their generosity, 3,000 local children will receive a third meal for the upcoming school year.
IM Kids 3rd Meal is a nonprofit, based out of Fenwick, Michigan, that is committed to ending childhood hunger in Ionia and Montcalm Counties. Food insecure children receive a 3rd meal that is well-balanced, and ready-to-eat. These meals are prepared by volunteers at the H.O. Steele Education Center, delivered to schools in the afternoon and then distributed to the students before they are dismissed for the day.
IM Kids 3rd Meal is serving four schools; two schools in Ionia County and two schools in Montcalm County, with a total of roughly 472 children being served. Food-insecure students, whose school is being served, receive a 3rd meal every school day.
This program is only possible because of the strong community support that it receives. This is completely a volunteer run organization, running off grants, donations, partners and community members.
