Get cooking with kids


GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) Meal time is extra special when it can be shared with the entire family. Chef Johnny Liu teaches children’s cooking classes through the City of Kentwood. He shares some of his favorite recipes with eightWest.

Pan Seared Salmon

  • 1 lb salmon
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 Lemons (juiced)
  • 2 Limes (juiced)
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 1/2 tsp season salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground pepper
  • 1 Tbsp Rosemary herb

Heat pan very hot, add olive oil and wait until the oil shimmers, then add the salmon.

After 3 minutes flip salmon over and check for browning. After 3 more minutes add the lemon and lime juice. After one minute place the salmon on a platter and let rest.

Then add the honey and one more Tbsp of olive oil to the juice and let reduce. When juice has turned brown add rosemary and take off heat. Then pour over salmon.

Green Bean Stir Fry

  • 2 lbs green bean (snip the ends)
  • 2 garlic cloves (rough chopped)
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup Shiitake mushrooms (sliced)
  • 1 small onion (sliced)
  • 2 jalapeno peppers (sliced with seeds)
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp cornstarch & 1/8 cup cold water) add cornstarch to water and stir to make slurry
  • 1/4 cup raspberries
