Creating power for more than 120 years


There are a lot of things that make the community of Lowell unique and a good place to live. One of those is something you might not think about when you think about where you’re going to live.

Lowell has public power, which means the electric system is owned  and operated by the City of Lowell, it’s been that way now for more than 120 years.

Today, we have Steven Donkersloot to tell us about this important part of the community.

In the early 1900’s as cities and towns moved into the electric age, most communities developed and operated their own municipally owned electric systems. Over time, many communities sold their systems to holding companies that grew into large investor-owned corporations.

Lowell resisted the temptation to sell its electric utility.
