GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – There are nearly 9 million legal permanent residents in the U.S. that are eligible for citizenship, but only 10% of those actually become citizens.
The biggest hurdle for these residents is the cost and access to the legal services to navigate the process.
This week’s Connecting with Community Awards Finalist partners with a faith based community to help provide low cost services. Immigrant Connection is a local branch of a national organization serving immigrants.
The Wesleyan Church started their first Immigrant Connection and now there are 13 different sites and all partner with local churches. The Grand Rapids Immigrant Connection opened its doors thanks to City Life Church.
One of the great services provided to the clients of Immigrant Connection is the U.S. Citizenship class. Participants learn about U.S. history and civics. They study as group for the test that official grants them citizenship.
Immigrant Connection is a legal office that can only offer services that are authorized under the law. So far, since February 2015, over 1050 clients have been served.
Continue to follow the Connecting with Community Awards and watch their stories every Friday at 5pm.
