Some Snow This Weekend, But No Big Storms

Bill's Blog

Snowfall Friday totaled 2″ at Mt. Pleasant, 2.3″ at Wiedman (Isabella Co.) and 2.5″ at Harrison (Clare Co.) and at Sterling (Arenac Co.). Cadillac reported 4.8″ of snow.

Some areas cleared out for awhile Friday night, allowing temps. to get a below freezing and creating isolated slippery spots – watch for that thru the morning this Saturday, especially on sidewalks, driveways, parking lots and lesser traveled roads. There are also slick spots on roads where it has snowed the most – north of a line from Baldwin to Alma.

So far, this month of January is running 5.6° warmer than average. We’ve had just 0.56″ of precipitation (half of average) and only 2.2″ of snow (not including today). Grand Rapids went 9 days without seeing a single snowflake (ending today – Fri. the 15th).

While we are getting some intermittent light snow over the weekend, it won’t be a lot of snow and much of it is melting as it falls.

Up top is the latest 7-day precipitation forecast from the Weather Prediction Center. They give much of West Michigan only around 1/4″ of precipitation. If all or mostly snow, that might be 1-4″ total. It does some lake-effect snow to areas south of Holland and north of Pentwater. The lake is still open water, and down the road the possibility exists of more significant lake-effect snow – maybe several inches in favorable bands. Some models are showing colder air coming down from Canada next weekend (23rd-24th).

Here’s a nice national satellite loop.
