Ruben Juarez joined WOOD TV8 in December 2020 as a general assignment reporter. It’s a homecoming of sorts for Ruben, as he was born and raised in Grand Rapids, attended Grand Rapids Central High School and graduated from Grand Valley State with a degree in broadcast journalism.
Ruben comes to WOOD TV8 from Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, which is located in the southernmost tip of the Lone Star State. He worked as a sports anchor/reporter and news reporter at KRGV-TV. Ruben was a weekday sports anchor in Spanish and reported stories in both Spanish and English. He was the station’s first Spanish sports anchor and the first sports journalist at KRGV-TV to go on-air in both English and Spanish.
The 2007 Central High School graduate is no stranger to WOOD TV8. He interned in the sports department in 2011 and eventually worked as a sports stringer. His first on-air job was at WLFI-TV in West Lafayette, Ind., where he was a sports anchor/reporter. He was lucky enough to follow many high school teams to state championship runs and traveled throughout the Midwest to cover the Purdue Boilermakers. One of his most memorable stories from his time in Indiana is about a Grand Rapids native who played for the Purdue basketball team.
In addition to reporting in English for News 8, Ruben also produces Spanish versions of his stories. He’s the first reporter at News 8 to regularly report separate versions of his stories in both languages.
Ruben is glad to be back home close to friends and family. In his free time, he loves to play soccer and basketball.
