David Horak joined the News 8 team as the Kalamazoo Bureau reporter in August 2021. A Grand Ledge native and Grand Ledge High School graduate, he is thrilled to be back in his home state and cover the issues that truly matter to Michiganders.
David comes to West Michigan from Nexstar affiliate WVNS-TV near the southern West Virginia city of Beckley. Within his first year of reporting, he won an Associated Press award for his story on a viral video that captured a coal miner singing the national anthem during a routine safety meeting. During his four years at WVNS, David rose the ranks to eventually become a morning and noon news anchor.
David attended Valparaiso University in Indiana, where he played football for three seasons as an offensive and defensive lineman. When not hitting the books or putting on the pads, he was thoroughly involved with the school’s student-run radio and television stations, WVUR-FM and VUTV, respectively. In May 2017, he received his bachelor’s degree in digital media with a focus in sports broadcasting. In 2016, David interned at Nexstar affiliate WLNS-TV in Lansing, where he covered amateur golf tournaments, local high school sports and various teams at the college and pro levels.
David is not shy when it comes to his love for local food, craft beer, weightlifting and his sports teams, especially Valparaiso, Michigan State and all of Detroit’s pro franchises. Considering himself a music man, he also sings, plays the piano and likes to discover music new and old of all genres.
