Grand Rapids, MI (WOOD) –Meijer is your headquarters for delicious, fresh, and locally sourced apples.  It is the most wonderful time of the year and no we are not talking about Christmas, its apple season!  One thing is for sure, nothing quite spells out fall like the crisp and delicious taste of a fresh and locally grown apple from Meijer.  Meijer’s apple buyers meet with local farmers to offer fresh produce while supporting our Michigan’s economy.

This year’s top apple, according to Meijer Registered Dietician Beth Eggleston, is the SweeTango Apple.  This new apple offers flavors of citrus, honey, and spice.  The apple is great for snacking but also adds great flavor to salads and is hearty enough for baking.  Not only are apples delicious they also are great for our health, especially when it comes to our daily fiber intake.  Did you know that each apple has about 5 grams of fiber?  That equates to 18 percent of our daily fiber value from one apple.

A good lunchtime hack to incorporate into your child’s diet is to slice their apples for them.  Meijer offers a variety of high-quality apple slicers.  One tip that Beth shared with us to keep your apples nice, crisp and white for lunch time is by simply slicing the apple, removing the core, then placing a rubber band around the apple.  Meijer is starting a fun apple promotion this Sunday, October 23rd where when you buy 5 dollars of apples online you will be sent a variety of apples to try at home.  The apple does not fall far from the tree when it comes to fresh and local apples at Meijer.
