CLEARWATER, Fla. (WOOD) - A Thornapple-Kellogg High School graduate is dead and his girlfriend is fighting for her life after a hit-and-run crash in Florida.
Rob Lemon of Middleville and his girlfriend Hilary Michalak of Midland had fallen in love with the Florida weather and had recently moved to Largo.
According to the Clearwater (Florida) Police Department, Lemon and Michalak were riding a tandem bicycle just after 6 a.m. Monday when they were struck from behind by a pickup truck. The driver of that truck took off.
Lemon died Monday afternoon at a Tampa hospital.
Michalak remains in critical condition. According to her CaringBridge page, she has serious head injuries and is surrounded by family.
Late Tuesday evening, police arrested Christopher Weed of Clearwater at his mother's home. He was charged with two felonies.
Lemon's father Pat told the Tampa Bay Times his son was an avid cyclist who wore an ankle bracelet with his father's name and phone number in case of an accident. Pat Lemon told the paper that his son was aware of deadly car-bicycle crashes and always wore a helmet. He was working as a manager at bike shop in Largo.
Lemon's high school principal Tony Koski said he remembered Lemon as an excellent student. No funeral arrangements have been made public.
An observation survey was conducted by the Wayne State University Transportation Research Group.
Michigan State Police has added eight new canine teams and four replacement teams that graduated from the MSP 2013 Basic Canine School Dec. 6.
The bill was drafted after Jessica Heeringa was abducted from her job in April.
