SAUGATUCK, Mich. (WOOD) - Two people were killed and a third was hospitalized in a crash that shut down southbound I-196 near Douglas for hours Thursday night.
The crashes happened around 8:20 p.m. in the southbound lanes just north of exit 36 to Blue Star Highway near Saugatuck.
Michigan State Police said the roads were wet and slushy last night which caused 21-year-old Jared Kavinsky from Hartland, Wisconsin to lose control of his car and hit a guard rail.
At that point, 62-year-old Terrence Noone from Chicago, witnessed the crash and stopped to help Kavinsky.
Both Noone and Kavinsky were standing near the damaged car when police said 26-year-old Joseph Willard lost control of his car and struck both Noone and Kavinsky.
Noone and Kavinsky were pronounced dead at the scene.
Willard was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
