GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - The shop that sits on 29th Street in Grand Rapids has seenplenty of changes over the past 16 years.
From wood working to producing parts of the local furnitureindustry, Wood Source owner Steve Johnson says they've always beenable to evolve with the economy.
That is until now.
"You could have sworn somebody locked our front door shut. Itwas just no traffic whatsoever," he told 24 Hour News 8.
Still, Johnson says he and his wife have kept working. They havetwo kids in college.
Recently, he pulled the information packet from the state aboutthe new MichiganBusiness Tax.
"I did some rough calculations in my head and it was going to be$8,000," Johnson said, $6,800 more than last year.
"That weekend, or a weekend or two later, I went home and mywife and I just kind of looked at each other and said, 'You knowwhat, it's not really worth it. It's not worth it to save thisbusiness.'"
There is a push at the Capitol in Lansing to help businessowners like Steve Johnson from shutting down or laying offemployees because of the higher taxes.
The state Senate has already passed a plan to do away with asurcharge included in the Michigan Business Tax. The debate nowcenters on how to make up the $457 million hole that it would leavein the state budget.
Any cut is coming too late for Johnson. He is ready to leave thestate.
"I'm very frustrated here. We've been battling this economy foryears," he says.
It's a hard reality when he thinks of the people that have madebusiness good in the past.
"We've had several calls and e-mails. It's tough."
Johnson says they will close in 90 days. He and his wife willthen do some millwork and dabble in other projects as they seewhere the future takes them.
