GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A Grand Rapids expectant mother was surprised to find her baby's crib, bought at a mom's resale event, had been recalled.
Amethyst Schott is expecting her first child. Her mother said she wanted to buy the baby's crib, and they picked one out at the West Michigan Mom's Sale over the weekend.
When they got home, Schott looked up the crib online, curious to see how much money she saved.
"It was partly just to make sure that the crib was safe and partly to make sure we got a really great deal on it," she said.
She found it had been recalled.
Target 8 ran checks on the crib on the saferproducts.gov website. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled the Jardine Crib in 2008, citing an entrapment and strangulation hazard. In 42 instances, the crib slats and spindles broke, creating a gap where babies got caught. Two of the children sustained abrasions and bruising.
"That's very scary," said Schott. "You don't realize that the first steps you take in protecting your child are before your child is even born when you're buying things for your child."
Kohler Expos organizes the West Michigan Mom's Sale.
"The sale is a great way for mothers to connect informally and sell used clothing, accessories and furniture. The transaction in question here is really an issue between the buyer and seller... and we hope that they will be able to resolve their differences amicably," the president said in an emailed statement.
The woman who sold the crib wasn't at home Tuesday.
Schott, meanwhile, will have to buy a new crib before her daughter is born in March. She brought the crib back to the mother who sold it to her, but says she didn't get a refund.
The West Michigan Moms Sale's website has a disclaimer saying it is 'not responsible for any items sold or purchased' at the sale.
Schott said she hopes other mothers do their research before they make a purchase.
"It's extremely important because the life of your baby depends on it. It's very frightening. You think things can never happen to you or your child. And it's very frightening for me to have found the results on the Internet," she said.
A donation account has been set up to help the family with its search to find a missing loved one.
Wind chills will be in the single figures Thursday, with snowfall totals in the 1- to 3-inch range.
The passenger in a pickup truck that slid off U.S. 31 and rolled over told 24 Hour News 8 that watching the video of the crash is "heart-wrenching."
