WACO, Texas (NBC) - The zoo in Waco is using iPads and Skype to stimulate orangutans and broaden their minds.
The tech-savvy apes have become very competent with the iPad, and it's not only a good experience for the orangutans but also for people learning about the intelligent apes.
"They are wild animals in captivity," said Zoo Curator Terri Cox. "We want to keep them active. We want to keep them mentally aware and physically stimulated."
Along with the fun time the iPad allows, it will also let Mae and other apes stay in contact with family members and other keepers if either should ever move.
Cameron Park Zoo got the iPads last fall to help enrich the lives of animals just like Mae, and it also helps spread awareness about orangutans in the wild.
Fred Glespie was found not guilty in the death of three children who died in an apartment fire.
Police are looking for the suspect in an armed robbery that occurred at a gas station in Plainwell Thursday night.
The rink will be open that day from 3-9 p.m.
