GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) Thousands of runners and walkers will hit the streets of Grand Rapids for the Fifth Third River Bank Run on Saturday, May 9. Some will be running for themselves, but many will be running for a cause.
All of this year's Road Warriors are participating for one of five official charities for the Fifth Third River Bank Run, including Make-A-Wish Michigan. 24 Hour News 8 Sports Director Jack Doles is a Road Warrior teaming with a West Michigan mom who developed an uncommon passion for running after she and her son both battled severe illness. Make-A-Wish Michigan helps make dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses. One of the children whose dream was realized is nine-year-old Cole. He was born with a chronic kidney disease and had a kidney transplant at 14 months old. He just celebrated his eighth kidney anniversary, but still lives with health issues related to his disease.
Cole always loved monster trucks, and his wish was to attend Monster Jam. In March 2010, when he was five years old, his wish was granted with a trip to Las Vegas to see the Monster Jam world finals. The trip gave Cole and his family memories that they can share for a lifetime.
Cole and his family help give back to Make-A-Wish Michigan by participating in the Fifth Third River Bank Run. His father, mother, and sister, have all participated in the run and his other sister and his grandmother have participated in the walk.
