MATTAWAN, Mich. (WOOD) - A 22-year-old firefighter died from an apparent heart attack while en route to an explosion at a Mattawan residence.
Nate Fruin was on board a support truck traveling to the scene in the 23000 block of M-43 Tuesday night.
The truck had just departed the fire station when a co-worker radioed that Fruin was having medical issues.
Other medical staff arrived and saw Fruin in cardiac arrest. Fruin was taken to Borgess Medical Hospital in Kalamazoo where he passed away.
Fruin did not have a cardiac history.
He was with the Mattawan Fire Department about six years, starting as a cadet.
The investigation into his death continues. Funeral arrangements have not been made yet.
