ROYALTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A man died after a vehicle hit him as he crossed the street in his medical scooter to get his newspaper.
Ronald Maier left his residence on Linco Road and crossed the street to go to his mailbox on the other side of the road northwest of Berrien Springs.
As he rode his scooter back to his home, police said a vehicle hit him around 6:40 a.m. Tuesday near Hollywood Road in Royalton Township, according to a news release.
Maier, 78, died from his injuries.
Michigan State Police in Berrien County said the darkness of the morning, lack of street lighting in the area, and Maier not wearing reflective clothing were factors in the incident.
