BANGOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A woman apparently drowned in a Van Buren County lake.
The 76-year-old from Illinois was staying with her son at his residence in the 66000 block of County Road 376 in Bangor Township.
The victim's son told police the family went to bed around 10 p.m. Sunday. The son then woke up around 2 a.m. Monday and went to check on his mother, who suffered from dementia and Alzheimer's disease, but she had disappeared, according to a news release.
He found her shortly thereafter in Van Auken Lake near the residence and called 911 to report a drowning.
Police and emergency personnel were dispatched around 3 a.m. and performed CPR on the victim but she died at the scene.
An autopsy result is pending, and the incident is still being investigated.
Police said the incident is not suspicious.
