GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - A prison facility in Coldwater was chosen for closure based on Gov. Rick Snyder's budget plan for 2011-12, the Michigan Department of Corrections announced Thursday.
The Florence Crane Correctional Facility is set to close June 1, according to the department. The facility's more than 1,000 prisoners will be transferred to vacant beds in other surrounding prisons.
The facility is one of the most expensive lower-level security prisons.
With the closing, employees face possible layoffs. Workers willing to transfer to other prisons, such as Lakeland Correctional Facility -- located down the road -- or are eligible for retirement, could reduce the number of potential layoffs.
State departments will pool their efforts to help the displaced workers.
The closure of the Coldwater facility is an addition to the pending closure of the Muskegon Correctional Facility, expected to close late spring because Pennsylvania terminated its contract to house prisoners in Michigan.
