DETROIT (AP) - Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been transferred to alow-security federal prison for men in Milan.
Kilpatrick was transferred Friday from the Oaks CorrectionalFacility near Manistee, where he had begun serving 18 months tofive years for probation violations on June 8.
James Thomas, Kilpatrick's lawyer, said access to researchfacilities and a computer will better allow his client to prepare adefense against federal fraud and tax charges.
The Detroit News says the Milan prison located about 15 milessouth of Ann Arbor is spread over 300 acres and features basketballand tennis courts, horseshoe pits and a softball field.
The facility's 1,500 inmates include Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab,the Nigerian accused of attempting to blow up a Detroit-boundairliner on Christmas Day.
