PARK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Sheriff's deputies in Ottawa County are on the lookout for a Park Township woman who was reported as missing on Tuesday.
Barbara Joan Westveer, 55, was reported missing by her husband on Tuesday evening.
Her husband called the sheriff's office after Westveer failed to show up for an appointment with a financial planner on Tuesday morning, according to an Ottawa County Sheriff's Office release. Westveer's husband told deputies that none of their family or his wife's friends had heard from her.
Deputies didn't find any signs of a struggle or foul play at Westveer's home. They said she appeared to have walked away from her home, leaving her car, medicine and all personal affects, according to Bennett.
Court records reveal major concern from Westveer's son in January. He filed a petition asking that she be hospitalized. He said she suffered from severe paranoia and that he worried she wasn't eating and caring for herself. One friend reportedly said she "looks like death"
The court ordered her forced evaluation, but an ER doctor at Holland Hospital ruled she was struggling with depression. After a 20 minute evaluation, he recommended counseling rather than hospitalization.
Neighbor Kathy Cook last saw Westveer Sunday.
"She seemed pretty expressionless. She just seemed not happy. She didn't smile and wave. She just kind of lifted her hand and kept walking," Cook said. "It's scary."
Ottawa County investigators have used boats to search the nearby Macatawa Lake because of its proximity to Westveer's house rather than evidence linking her to the water, but they found no sign of Westveer.
"What happened to her? You don't just disappear," Cook wondered. "We're concerned for her. We want a good outcome of this. We're hoping the best."
Lt. Mark Bennett with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said that Westveer and her husband were separated but "reconciling" at the time of her disappearance. The couple has no history of domestic violence in Ottawa County.
Westveer is 6-foot-1 and about 160 pounds. She has grey hair and green eyes.
