CROCKERY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - A fire started in the apartment rented by a woman who was in the process of moving out and who neighbors say felt threatened by her boyfriend.
The fire ignited around 3:25 a.m. Monday in an unoccupied downstairs unit at Country Villa Apartments, 14340 State Road, in Crockery Township.
An upstairs neighbor told 24 Hour News 8 he awoke and was able to escape his apartment, which filled with smoke, after the smoke detectors did not work.
"The girl whose apartment caught on fire, her and her boyfriend got into an argument not too long ago, he threatened her with violence," Russell James, a neighbor, told 24 Hour News 8. "She says she couldn't stay here because she felt threatened, so she's moving, and then this happens."
Fire officials told 24 Hour News 8 at the scene the fire is under investigation. When asked whether the fire may be suspicious, they said it is too early to tell.
Nobody was injured.
