MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) - A Norton Shores man who abused his 2-month old son, sending the boy to a hospital, will spend at least three years in prison.
Joseph Krypel II was sentenced Monday in Muskegon County Circuit Court to between three and 15 years in prison. He pleaded no contest to first-degree child abuse in March.
Authorities say Krypel hurt his son Joseph Krypel III -- perhaps by shaking him -- in their Norton Shores home in late December 2011.
Authorities were alerted to the alleged abuse after the baby was taken to Mercy Health Partners Hackley Campus emergency room, suffering from dehydration and difficulty breathing, police said. The baby stopped breathing for a short time. He was in such poor condition that he was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. He spent at least six days in the hospital.
Statements from doctors and other interviews led authorities to believe that Krypel was responsible.
The rink will be open that day from 3-9 p.m.
