MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) - A Muskegon High School student was arrested, nine others were detained and one was injured after numerous fights occurred in the cafeteria Tuesday.
Two female students began fighting, according to a news release, and a school resource officer tried to make peace. That is when a male student interfered, police said.
The SRO radioed for backup. Responding Muskegon Department of Public Safety officers, along with school staff, broke up a half dozen more fights.
Police officers used pepper spray to help disperse the students during the incident.
One student was jailed and another was transported to a hospital after complaining of a minor injury. Other students could face charges as the investigation continues.
No other injuries were reported and no weapons were involved in the incident.
Several officers remained at Muskegon High School, working with school administrators, as classes resumed.
It is unknown at this time what started the original fight.
On Thursday, the medical examiner's office said CMU student Kelly Markatos died as a result of the eating disorder bulimia.
