MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) - Emergency crews were called to Kruse Park in Muskegon Friday evening to save a struggling swimmer but the swimmer later died in a Muskegon hospital.
According to police, at 6:27 p.m. Pedro Contreras-Martinez, 32, of Wyoming was pulled from the water 75 to 100 yards off shore where he was last seen in the water.
Rescue personnel performed CPR on the man to try to revive him on the beach but he was unresponsive. He was transported to the campus of the Mercy Health-Hackley Hospital by ambulance and later pronounced dead.
Autopsy results are pending as the investigation continues.
The U.S. Coast Guard, Muskegon police and fire departments all responded to the scene.
