WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) - A new development project aims to revitalize a portion of 28th Street in Wyoming.
"28 West" would create a town center area between Clyde Park and Burlingame avenues SW south of 28th Street to Paririe Parkway. That stretch west of US-131 includes Rogers Plaza and the Wyoming Village Mall. Klingman's and Studio 28 used to be located there.
Ideally, according to a summary of the project on Wyoming's website, the mixed-used 28 West would include shopping and dining.
The vision is designed around something called form-based code, which sets regulations versus guidelines for developers. The code gives the city the ability to set where buildings go and what they look like.
"If a developer comes in and has the plans they know exactly what is expected, it takes the guess work out, and it helps us expedite their investment into the community," Rebecca Rynbrandt, the director of community services for Wyoming, explained.
The Wyoming Downtown Development Authority describes the project as "a long-term vision for 28th Street to become a sustainable, economically vibrant, walkable town center in Wyoming."
"What we have struggled with a little bit is that safe environment where people feel they can walk and cross into an area where they can shop from store to store," Rynbrandt said.
Organizers say the plan has been three years in the making.
"What did they say about Grand Rapids and Division and where Van Andel Arena is now? Every year goes through a cycle and we are going from good to great," Rynbrandt said.
The DDA using 28th Street's high traffic and name recognition -- described as "second to none" -- to sell the project to developers.
Rynbrandt says there is already interest.
"We're already getting calls from developers on the Detroit side saying, 'Hey we want to look at moving into the Grand Rapids metropolitan market,' and they're already scheduling meetings," she said.
A community meeting to discuss the project and get public feedback is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Wyoming branch of the Kent District Library on Michael Avenue SW.
