ROCKFORD, Mich. (WOOD) - Two Traverse City men were killed a seven-vehicle crash on southbound US-131 north of Grand Rapids Tuesday morning.
A preliminary investigation showed that a 57-year-old Sparta man was driving a 2013 Ford pickup truck south near 10 Mile Road, north of the Post Drive exit in Plainfield Township near Rockford, according to a release from Michigan State Police.
Several cars were stopped in front of him due to a traffic backup, MSP said. The driver was traveling at a high rate of speed and never braked before colliding with other vehicles.
Seven vehicles were involved in the resulting chain-reaction crash, MSP said.
The vehicle in which Traverse City men John Pomeroy, 49, and 30-year-old William Kochis were driving was hit first. Both were killed.
The at-fault driver and several other people were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.
The southbound lanes were closed between 8 a.m. and 11:25 a.m. as authorities investigated.
