GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) - A driver escaped from his sinking vehicle after it slid off the highway and went into flood waters.
The crash happened along I-196 near the Chicago Drive exit around 5 a.m. Saturday.
Police said the driver hit a patch of ice on the highway and he lost control of his vehicle. It went into a low area off the highway that is flooded due to the Grand River flooding.
The driver was able to escape to safety. The car sunk and is completely submerged.
The driver was transported by ambulance to the hospital to get checked out.
Police responded to at least 3 crashes along I-196 west of Grand Rapids early this morning due to icy roads.
