PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Michigan State Police troopers came across an unusual complication at the scene of a fatal crash on US-131 north of Grand Rapids Tuesday.

Some troopers were directing traffic, trying alleviate traffic congestion. But many drivers slowed to express their condolences about the death of Trooper Paul Butterfield, who was shot during a Monday night traffic stop and died a few hours later at the hospital.
Troopers tried to respond without giving a hand signal that would tie up traffic even further.
One trooper said it's not typical for people to respond that way.
"I've seen a lot of people giving us thumbs up, waving, and saying thank you. Not very common," he said.
The troopers said they all appreciate the support.
