KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) - A driver who ran over another woman multiple times with a vehicle, killing her, was sentenced Tuesday in a Kent County courtroom.
Gloria VanPutten will pay $1,000 in fines, plus court costs. Her license was suspended indefinitely.
The incident occurred May 30 in the 1600 block of E. Paris Avenue SE south of Lake Drive in Kentwood.
VanPutten drove out of a private drive and her pickup truck collided with a southbound vehicle, police said.
Margaret Pittman, who was not involved in the crash, got out of her minivan to help VanPutten.
A witness told 24 Hour News 8 that Pittman was shouting at VanPutten and holding up her hands.
Then, police said, Pittman tried to grab the driver's side door handle. The truck accelerated and ran over Pittman. The witness said the truck backed up and ran over Pittman again, and then drove forward, running over her a third time.
The witness said VanPutten was crying and clearly shaken up.
Pittman, 50, died at the scene.
An ambulance transported VanPutten to a hospital. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the initial crash was not hurt.
VanPutten’s driving record reveals she received a ticket in 2011 for failing to yield in a car accident that caused an injury.
The suspects stole cash and fled the scene.
A memorial is scheduled Thursday night for three young siblings who died in an apartment fire 10 months ago.
A donation account has been set up to help the family with its search to find a missing loved one.
