ROCKFORD, Mich. (WOOD) - U.S. 131 in northern Kent County was lit up Friday night byhundreds of bikers.
Chapter Mi-G of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association held its23rd annual Midnight Ride. The group left the Rockford Meijer atmidnight and will arrive in St. Ignace around 8 a.m. after crossingthe Mackinac Bridge.
The ride serves as a fundraiser for the West Michigan chapter ofthe Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Last year's ride raised$24,500 for JDRF and has raised $330,000 during the past 22rides.
The motorcycle riders will make several stops along the way andevents are scheduled after their arrival in St. Ignace, including a"light parade".
The first Midnight Ride was held in August 1986 when the groupdecided it was too hot to ride during the day and that it would bebetter and cooler to ride at night. They travelled to theMackinac Bridge and the tradition was born.
